About Gifu / Toyama
Gifu and Toyama prefectures share the western flank of the Japanese Alps — the Hida and Tateyama ranges, dramatic mountains that catch the Sea of Japan storm tracks head-on. The skiing here is dominated by snow volume rather than name recognition. Norikura Onsen, Hirayu Onsen and the old hot-spring villages of the region trade the destination-resort polish of Hakuba for hot-spring authenticity and quieter slopes. The standout is Tateyama itself — not a resort but a backcountry destination accessed via the Tateyama Alpine Route, which only opens in late April when the snowpack is at its absolute deepest (often 15-20 metres deep along the road walls). For lift-served skiing in the area, Dynaland and Takasu Snow Park in southern Gifu are the largest. Travel is by JR train via Toyama or Takayama, then local bus or rental car — these aren't bullet-train-and-walk destinations. Choose this region if you want the snow without the crowds, are comfortable with limited English, and want to combine skiing with onsen culture in places that don't feel built for international visitors. Spring touring is the local speciality.
