About Chugoku
Chugoku is western Honshu — Hiroshima, Okayama, Tottori, Shimane, Yamaguchi. It's the southernmost band of mainland Japan with reliable lift-served skiing, and snow conditions reflect that: warmer temperatures, denser snow, shorter seasons (typically late December to early March). Daisen in Tottori is the regional standout, a striking volcanic cone with surprisingly steep upper terrain and dramatic views over the Sea of Japan. Hiruzen Kogen and Megahira in Hiroshima Prefecture are the family destinations. Resorts here are small, local, and mostly serve the Chugoku and northern Kyushu populations rather than international visitors. Travel is by Sanyo or Sanin shinkansen plus rental car. Choose this region if you're already in western Japan for sightseeing — the Hiroshima atomic dome, Itsukushima Shrine, the Iwami Ginzan silver mines — and want to add a day or two on snow. Don't fly here for the skiing alone. Mid-week and early-season trips run the risk of thin cover; late-January through mid-February is the safest window.
